Year 2020 is less than 2 months away and it's never been a better time to look ahead at what will be trending in interior design and decoration next year. After hours of research and mood boarding I've come up with my top 5 predicted trends for Interior Design in 2020.

So, make way for statement occasional chairs, embrace that wall paneling, say hello to the return of black, opt for sustainable products and introduce abstract artwork because interior decor never looked so good!

Mood Board for 2020 Interior Design Trends

Occasional chairs, the ultimate statement

Is your New Year’s resolution to make more time for you? These days we are all so busy, we never actually get the chance to sit down, read a book, and just relax. Well, this news might help...occasional chairs are 2020s interior design go to. Not only do they serve a practical purpose they look great in any space no matter if it’s your bedroom, lounge or even office, occasional chairs can transform a room and add some flare and colour.

Look for feel good materials like velvet for some glamour or linen for an organic feel in rich bold colours like royal blue, mustard yellow and of course quirky accents like gold brushed legs or distressed timber arm rests. Most importantly pick styles that represent you, your personality and the vibe you want to project in your space.

Wall Paneling, not just for the period homes

Wall paneling and cladding is so HOT right now and no longer just for period homes. Back in the day, wall paneling originally served more a practical purpose rather than a decorative one, it would provide homes with an extra layer of insulation and help warm up rooms with cold stone walls. Now, it does so much more, it adds character, texture and interest to every room. It’s just another way to make a statement and makes your space feel a little more lush to an otherwise ordinary room.

Black is back, the go to colour

There’s been a common misconception with the colour black over the years, to open up a space we think bright white to give us the illusion that a room is bigger. Consequently, the reverse for black we think this colour closes a space and forms a very moody, dark feel. But don’t be fooled, this isn’t always the case! Black can be used to create depth, adds sophistication and sharpens any decorative scheme. Don’t know where to start? Look for black border picture frames, add a black candle to the coffee table, find a black faux fur throw for the couch or invest in a matt black kitchen tap.

Sustainable homes and homewares, make every day earth day

I’m fortunate enough to have a sibling studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science and on the daily he informs me on the latest in sustainability and advocates for eco-friendly products. Never has it been this important for us to understand how we contribute and consequently impact the environment and what we as individuals can do to mitigate the negative impact. So, what’s this got to do with interior design? A lot! Architects and Interior Designers around the world now have a focus to determine efficient and effective uses of space, selecting materials that offer low environmental impact and lower pollution, waste and energy consumption. So, it’s never been trendier to shop for environmentally friendly lighting, appliances, furniture, décor and basically everything else in between!

Purchase from brands that practice sustainability and contribute positively to the environment. If you don’t know where to start think recycled materials like a recycled wood dining table, vintage/reclaimed fabrics, recycled plastic dining chairs, fair trade organic towels and bedding, stainless steel straws, biodegradable garden pots, energy efficient lamps and LED lighting. Not only will these items contribute to your homes organic and natural aesthetic, it’s creating a clean, environmentally friendly home.

Abstract artwork, not just a pretty face

Abstract artwork has never been so sexy! Eyes, noses, smiles and faces inspired by Picasso’s brush strokes mixed with surrealist sculptures, no matter if it’s a vase, candle or even a pair of earrings you’ll be as trending as avocado by introducing these light-hearted and unique pieces to your home! It’s a way of adding a touch of cheekiness to your space and lightening up the energy in a communal room like a lounge, kitchen or entertainment area. These make great gifts too, buying décor for other people’s homes is always difficult as it needs to reflect their own taste and can sometimes be a bit too personal, but these pieces are perfect- they go with any home design, easy to style and very affordable!
