As the days get shorter and the mornings grow colder; I thought there was no better time than now to share with you some of my favourite interior design trends coming up for this winter season. As I look back on last year, it was all about millennial pinks, textured rugs, the introduction of velvet everything, greenery inside the home and of course the overuse of my personal favourite staple colour: grey.
Now, it’s time to make way for lavish terrazzo tiles, rich colours like plum, the continuation of velvet in bigger and better forms and of course dark florals and chunky throws. No matter your price point, style, or look you are going for there is something for everyone come this fall! So what are you waiting for? Read on for Melissa T Design’s 2018 Winter trends.

Velvet Upholstery
Velvet is elegant yet calm and absolutely huge not only in interior spaces but the fashion scene. Top fashion houses such as Gucci, Chanel and Versace are adopting this luxe fabric and making it a part of their staple fashion pieces (not to mention the Gucci Black Velvet Chain bag I splurged on this summer). This material has the ability to transform a space and can be quite literally the winning statement piece for your home. According to studies, beyond the elegant beauty of velvet, soft textured fabrics like velvet are associated with feelings of comfort and protection. Need I say more?
Terrazzo
Guys, it’s the new “it” material and unfortunately for my marble coffee table it’s the material replacing marble and concrete for 2018. Terrazzo; whether this material is styled in an understated monochromatic fashion or amplified in a floor to ceiling bathroom; it complements a variety of home decor styles — whether minimalist or maximalist- trust me on this…it’s going to be BIG!
Metallic Accents
Think brushed gold, glittering silvers...its everywhere! Lamps, vases, chair bases, drawer handles and smaller accessories are the perfect way to inject this new trend into your home without having to spend an arm and a leg on getting all new furniture.
Rich Colour Decor
After years of monochrome, pastel and Scandi-themed decor, rich colour is finally making a comeback… if you’re a little hesitant start small, opt for a chunky plum coloured throw or a small round emerald green cushion and work towards painting your bedroom walls a nice deep blue. Not only will it bring warmth into the home for winter but it will play as the focal point of your room and go really well with last season’s every shade of grey!
