Statistics show that we spend 7 years of our whole lives sitting in bed before and after sleep…if you ask me that’s quite a lot of time we dedicate to spending time in one space, so let’s strive to make it our favourite space. So scroll down; I’m sharing 7 of my personal favourite bedroom décor styling tips with you so we can make sure it’s the personal haven you have always dreamed of.

1. Have a theme in mind
This doesn’t mean you need to stick to one central design, the whole idea is to compliment not match when it comes to choosing fabrics, colours, textures and the overall design…Ask yourself am I more shabby chic? Scandi? Contemporary French lover? Modern minimalist? Man cave fan? Or a bohemian babe? Once you have something in mind try and extend on that; create a mood board of bedroom designs or use Pinterest boards as a guide to create your theme and make it your own.
2. Rug up
Nothing ruins a morning like stepping out of your warm and cosy bed only to place your feet on the freezing, hard floor. Invest in a rug or floor matt that goes well with the theme of the room. If you have darker walls this is a great opportunity to brighten it up with some lighter carpet. Already have carpet in the room? Perfect, layer it with a fluffy white fux fur rug or a round geometric matt.
3. Let there be light
This is so, so, sooo important! Light is what opens your room up, makes it inviting and creates that warm space you strive to achieve. Letting in lots of natural light is key. Try investing in window coverings that can easily be open to welcome the sun and pulled closed for privacy and rest time. Side lamps can be fantastic when seeking that transition from reading a book in bed to sleeping.
4. Colour correction
This isn’t your kitchen, it’s time for that post box red feature wall to go. Try and opt for colours that make you feel good, relaxed and happy. For cosy environments try playing with warm, rich earth and skin tones such as terra cotta, copper, coral, cream and tan. Pinks and peaches for romance. Add light blues for calmness and shades of grey for style and sophistication. Don’t forget about combining those colour pallets with accent colours here and there. Try adding bold emerald greens with grey coloured bedrooms or metallic like silver and gold with pastel coloured bedrooms for some glam.
5. Clear the clutter
From an interior design perspective clutter distracts the eye from the style of the bedroom and devalues the design. From a Feng Shui perspective it is much worse; it symbolizes unfinished business and delays forward progress in life. So my secrete here is simple; clear and contain the clutter by investing in furniture that prevents messiness from occurring- try some spacious side tables to store valuables in, an ottoman to store unused linen and proper clothing and shoe storage in the wardrobe.
6. Cherish your favourite pieces
The whole idea of having your own space is that you have the freedom to actually make it your own. Don’t shy away from displaying that beautiful wall art you bought at a local market. If you’re a traveler create a gallery wall of your favourite places, hang up that DIY project art piece, display those favourite coffee table books you read over and over again on your side tables or exhibition your favourite throw pillow right at the center of your bed.
7. The centerpiece
Lastly, one of the most important things to remember is that your bed is your bedrooms centerpiece (yes sounds a little obvious but trust me so many people get this wrong). Firstly, start with the essentials like choosing a proper position in the room for the bed to go, a comfortable mattress, snuggly sheets and a warm doona. Now for the fun part; style the bed to make it the first and last thing you look at when entering or exiting this space. Play with different colours from your selected colour pallet including those accent colours with a few display pillows in different sizes, textures and fabrics. Add a knitted throw or perhaps a fux fur that feel lovely on the fingers. Hang a piece of art over the bed or decorate the wall behind the bed with a lovely accent wallpaper, perhaps even add a headboard (a fantastic design addition-not to mention a symbolic Feng Shui element). Once you have this down pact your journey to reaching that happy and relaxing retreat you have always wanted will be a reality.
